Description

The role involves the management of a team of technical architects and developers who make up the Technical Department at Fortune Cookie.

The role requires both management and hands-on technical skills and would suit a person who has worked as a lead developer or team manager in a technical team.

The head of department is responsible for the output of the department and will actively monitor the quality of applications that are produced through code reviews and audits. The role will be responsible for release management and will have final authorisation for the deployment of web applications in to production.

You will work closely with project managers to provide or validate technical build estimates and to advise on project risks of a technical nature.

You will be responsible for managing the maintenance of web applications developed by the team and will assess maintenance requests and assign appropriate resources to complete them.

The head of department role will recruit technical developers and architects in response to business requirements.

The role will also involve the mentoring, learning development and line management of technical team members including training, motivation and the provision of 360 degree appraisals.

As Head of Department you will also take an active part in the refinement and ongoing development of the technical processes and competencies of the company, and using your experience you will have the opportunity to take an active role in helping to shape Fortune Cookie’s technical strategy going forward.


Skills required

Management Skills

  • Excellent people skills with an ability to lead, motivate and inspire others;
  • Proven management experience including recognising and developing potential in team members as part of maintaining the skills and capabilities of your department;
  • Experience of interviewing and testing technical candidates during the recruitment process;
  • Experience and knowledge of project management methodologies;
  • Ability to prescribe and sustain industry regarded “best practice” on proposed technical solutions;
  • Excellent communication skills including written English, verbal presentation and visual representation.

Technical Skills

  • Practical knowledge and experience of best practices and standards for all relevant strategic platforms;
  • Advanced skills in .NET development;
  • Advanced knowledge of source control systems;
  • Knowledge of browser agent capabilities including web browsers, mobile browsers and other devices;
  • The ability to advise and lead on technical research and development initiatives, on behalf of the company;
  • Experience in designing distributed, transactional systems for the web;
  • Experience in object-oriented analysis and design (OOAD);
  • Experience in data design using industry standard methodologies;
  • Experience in providing technical estimates;
  • Be able to break down technical projects into discrete tasks to assist in the creation of a project plan.

Experience

  • Proven track record in developing solutions or developing web applications within enterprise architectures;
  • Experience of team management or team leadership of a technical team;
  • Developing web applications in the travel, tourism and leisure and or the financial services sector would be beneficial;
  • Knowledge of enterprise and web content management products is also highly desirable.
