Legal & General launches Home Contents Calculator
The average value of the contents of a home in Britain is estimated to be over £40,000.

But when Legal & General surveyed more than 4000 customers as part of its Changing Face of British Homes research, it discovered that 27% of us value our home contents at less than £20,000. This means many of us may be underinsured, in the worse cases by as much as 100%.
Now help is at hand. Digital agency Fortune Cookie has stepped in with an innovative new way to help Legal & General customers to ensure they have the right amount of home contents cover should their valuable possessions be stolen or damaged.
Described by Fortune Cookie’s managing director Justin Cooke as “incredibly easy to use and beautiful too”, Fortune Cookie has developed a three dimensional, interactive Home Contents Calculator to help visitors to Legal & General’s website to more accurately estimate the amount of home contents cover they need.
To work out the value of the contents of your home, simply take a room-by-room tour of a virtual house: www.legalandgeneral.com/contentscalculator. Calculate how much it would cost to replace the items in each room and receive an estimate of how much home contents cover you actually require.

Garry Skelton, Marketing director for Legal & General’s general insurance business says: “Many of us seem to be seriously underestimating the value of the contents of our homes. As every home is different our Home Contents Calculator has the flexibility for customers to enter amounts that are appropriate to them to get a more personalised valuation.”
Skelton continues, “Our customers can now be confident that they can arrange the appropriate level of home contents insurance cover and can reduce the risk of being underinsured.”
Justin Cooke, managing director of Fortune Cookie, says: “Who would have thought that calculating the value of your home contents could be this much fun?! We’ve gotten rid of the boring online form and replaced it with a beautiful, usable and useful interactive tool.”
Cooke continues, “TV shows like the BBC’s Cash in the Attic, have made people more aware that they may have items of value hidden away in drawers and lofts, but how many of us remember to include these items when we tot up our home contents value for insurance purposes? The Home Contents Calculator is a brilliant example of how companies like Legal & General can create useful interactive tools that meet their business objectives and make life easier for their customers.”
